kristine's geburtstag

Last night, I went with the Kroth family (less Angela, who is studying abroad in Florida) to the Wilhelmsbad country club for Werner's sister's 50th birthday party. It was an awesome family party to say the least. There was a pianist, about 60 guests, great service, and a really happy atmosphere. Marcus sat by me, helping to translate the birthday toasts and menus. I tried my first duck in an appetizer and my first spätzle with the main dish. And I'm pretty sure German hefeweizen is the best drink on the planet.

I was able to meet more of the family and some of Kristine's interesting neighbors. One man, who I enjoyed speaking with very much, rode in the cock pit of a British airplane as a little boy during the Berlin Airlift. Turns out, he thought I was pretty cool too, telling Kristine that he had the grandest evening and would like to speak with me again some time. I met again with Werner's mother and this time, I understood our entire conversation. I was so proud! Marcus and I laughed because somehow, I guess she is able to converse with anyone (specifically my dad and uncle Fritz) who has limited German language skills when they visit.

Upon arriving home, Marcus, Claudia, and I stayed up late in the wee hours discussing politics, economics, etc, and I was very surprised to find out that Marcus has read papers by some of my absolute favorite professors at UCSB, while studying economics himself in Germany. I feel so lucky to have been taught by them.

It was a nice, relaxing Sunday at the house, enjoying the terrace and company, today including Marcus's friend Anais. I fly to Potsdam tomorrow, ready with a charged phone, general excitement, and a growing (albeit baby) vocabulary. One problem: you are alotted 40 kilograms for a checked bag on transatlantic flights... which my suitcase already exceeded... and only 20 kilograms (or €5 per kilogram over) for flights within Germany. Uh oh.

You have made some wonderful observations so far. Glad to read of your appreciation for some wonderful customs. We, too, enjoyed our stay in Germany. And we always appreciated how different Berlin is from the rest of the country. Very cosmopolitan, sophisticated, and modern, but with appeciation for the past too. Arnie
